The industrial sawdust industry is developing at an alarming rate. Global production in 2001 the total particle size of about 200 million tons (MT), 2015 about 28 million tons. In 2016 the United States exported about 19 million tons of wood chips, wood, logs and chips, of which 7.9 million tons (41%) were logs. The western United States exported 5.8 million tons (74%) of logs, 1.4 million tons in the south and 600,000 tons in the north. However, the vast majority of logs exported in the United States (7.4 million tonnes of 7.9 million tonnes) are sold to Asian markets. Most of the exports through the western port, due to the region's high quality timber, closer to Asia.

Of the recent 19 million MT of wood pellets, lumber, logs and wood chips exported from the continental US in 2016, 7.9 million MT (41 percent) were logs (Fig. 1). In total, 5.8 million MT (74 percent) of logs out of the West, 1.4 million MT out of the South, and 0.6 million MT out of the North, to other countries. However, most logs (7.4 of 7.9 million MT) exported out of the US were destined for Asian markets . The majority were exported out of western ports due to the region's high-quality timber and closer to Asia.

 

According to the amount of wood chips is the United States exports the second most important wood products, a total of 4.7 million tons. More than 99% were shipped from the south to the European port.

On a volume basis, wood pellets were the next next significant wood product export from the U.S., totaling 4.7 million MT. Over 99 percent of this volume was shipped from the South and received into European ports.

In the United States 3.5 million tons of timber exports, 2 million tons (57%) through the southern port shipments, 800,000 tons (22%) shipped from the northern port, 700,000 tons (21%) shipped from the western port. The United States exported about 2.9 million tons of wood chips, of which 1.7 million tons (59%) through the western port, mainly to Japan. Another 1.1 million tons (3%) from the southern port exports.

(80 percent) were shipped from North ports and 0.7 million MT (21 percent) were shipped from West ports. Approximately 2.9 million MT of wood chips were exported from the US, of which 1.7 million MT (59 percent) were were shipped via South ports, primary to Japan.

Asian countries are important markets for US exports of wood products, especially logs and wood exported to China, Japan and Vietnam. For these three port areas, logs and timber exports in 2016 were the most important exports of Asian countries. The only exception is the western wood chips exported to Japan.
